Seminar # 4  Preparing Images for Publications:

Frustrated with images that look flat and puzzled by all the technical jargon printed in those photography guidelines? This seminar, by FLC members Michael DeFreitas and Ellen Barone will help "writers who shoot" prepare images for publication – print and web. You’ll learn simple software functions that will put some pop back into flat images, how to crop and resize your images and how to remove dust spots with the clone and/or healing brush tool. The seminar will also explore the file formats (jpegs, tiffs and RAW) used by various media, properly storing your images, and using the meta data field to embed caption and copyright information with your images.

In this seminar, the group will be divided into Mac and PC users. Those attending should have his/her own laptop with Photoshop CS or higher  or Elements 4 or higher.

This workshop is aimed at more advanced  photographers. (Participants will need to bring their laptops with Photoshop CS3 & RAW 4.2 full or demos loaded).

9:45 a.m. - depart for photo shoots around Milwaukee.  You will be given a hit-the-ground-running assignment to shoot a segment of the city’s bustling Saturday morning fabric.

10:00 - 12:30

Area professional photographers will host groups of three-to-six registrants, offering suggestions on shooting angles, subjects and technique.   Subjects to be covered include art/museums, Milwaukee River, Brady Street, Hispanic neighborhoods and the  lakefront.  You are on your own for lunch, which will be at several of Milwaukee’s iconic, inexpensive comfort food locales found on your respective tour (Real Chili, George Web, El Rey and so on).  These local facilities will be alerted that you will be photographing in their establishments.  Your guides will deliver you back to Johnston Hall in time for your critique session.  You will then have about 30 minutes to edit and organize your material before the general session begins.

1-3 p.m. - photo showcase and critique session (each registrant can show up to 10 images of their Milwaukee scenes)

3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Keywording & Organizing Your Photos

Florida-based photographer Tim O'Keefe, an instructor with the SATW Inastitute for Travel Writing and Photography in Orlando, will discuss how to assign Captions and Keywords to your photos. Often the most onerous task associated with any shoot, proper keywording is crucial for locating and selling your images since many photo buyers search by keywords before ever looking at images. Tim’s presentation will include how programs like Adobe Lightroom automatically organize photos and make global keywording possible.
